Weaving Words with Chris Coey

Press release   •   Sep 15, 2014 09:00 BST

The Word Weavers group will be warmly welcoming the esteemed poet Chris Coey to host a writing workshop, in celebration of National Poetry Day.

Join other wordsmiths at Rochdale Central Library, Number One Riverside, from 5.15pm to 7.15pm on Monday 29 September and immerse yourself in the creative arts of poetry and prose.

Chris, who has published a poetry collection called ‘Different Ages, Different Walks’ and won a number of prestigious competitions, including the Wirral Ode Show and LiverPoetry, looks set to entertain the weavers with his poetic skills and extensive knowledge.

He said: “My workshop aims to challenge and inspire beginners and seasoned writers alike, those attending can expect to come away with newly acquired technical skills and a fresh approach to their own writing.”

The Word Weavers represent an informal creative writing group that meets in Rochdale Central Library on the second and fourth Monday of each month. They run their own workshops in which they write and explore an eclectic mix of contrasting ideas. The group, led by the experienced host Eileen Earnshaw, is highly supportive and welcomes anyone of any ability.

The forthcoming event is to be held in conjunction with National Poetry Day on Thursday 2 October. Founded in 1994 by William Sieghart it represents ‘a nationwide celebration’ that “shakes poetry from its dust-jacket into the nation’s streets, offices, shops, playgrounds, train stations and airwaves.” This year’s theme is ‘remember’.

Councillor Neil Emmott, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Neighbourhoods:

“We have a long and proud history in Britain of producing world renowned poets and of encouraging and promoting expression through poetry and prose. Groups like Word Weavers represent a modern opportunity to practice an ancient cultural tradition.

“Chris is a superb poet and I encourage local writers to attend and listen to what he has to say.”

Word Weavers usually meet in room G11 at Number One Riverside, but Chris’s workshop will be held in G10. Places are free, but limited, and booking is essential. Please email or call 01706 924971 to reserve your place.
