Takeaway Owners Frying High After Pioneering Health Programme For National Chip Week

Takeaway owners in Rochdale borough’s Healthier Chips Scheme took part in a pioneering health programme to pass on more health tips to customers.

The training event was arranged by Rochdale Borough Council, which runs the Healthier Chips Scheme, to coincide with National Chip Week, from 17—23 February.

Five takeaway owners successfully attended a course, which after completion of an exam leads to their Royal Society of Public Health Level 2 Understanding Health Improvements qualification. This helps them have conversations with customers aimed at making healthier lifestyle choices by signposting basic healthy choice tips and ways of getting support.

Councillor Colin Lambert, Lead Member for Health, said: “This is the first time that Rochdale Borough takeaway owners have been able to gain this qualification, which is great news for their customers. The Healthier Chips Scheme is all about reducing saturated oil and transfats in chips, and about supporting customers by letting them make easy decisions for healthier chips.

“We’ve had a great uptake from takeaway owners in the borough and this is the next step, so it is excellent to see all the takeaway owners involved doing so well.”

The five takeaway owners who attended the course are:

  • Fu Keung Lee of Lee’s Fish Bar;
  • Hanif Mohammed of Papas Kebab House ;
  • Azzedine Ghezali of Pizza Mario;
  • Lam Ying Yung of Yungs;
  • Pinlan Chen of Chan’s Takeaway.

A total of 27 takeaway owners across Rochdale Borough Council’s area have taken part in the Healthier Chips Scheme since it was launched last year.
