Recycling Right is Award Winning in Rochdale

Press release   •   Oct 24, 2014 16:35 BST

Rochdale Borough Council, in partnership with Recycle for Greater Manchester won the Sustainable/Green marketing campaign of the year award at the Northern Marketing Awards, for the Right Stuff Right Bin campaign.

The award winning pilot communications campaign was designed to support residents to recycle right in the Newbold area.

During bin collections, the crews either left a green ‘Right stuff, Right bin’ tag on bins that contained the correct items, thanking residents for recycling correctly or a red ‘Wrong stuff, Wrong bin’ tag if they recycled incorrectly. This was supported with community door-knocking, events and local advertising.

The judges felt that this was: “the stand-out campaign in its category with the client and agency clearly working well together. The campaign was well structured, thorough and delivered fantastic results.”

As a result of the campaign, there was a 61 per cent reduction in the amount of incorrect items put in the mixed recycling bin and the recycling rate increased by 49 per cent. The campaign also delivered more than £20,000 in disposal cost savings between September and November 2013.

Councillor Jacqui Beswick, Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Environment, said “We are very excited to be able to share in the success of this fantastic campaign which took place in the Newbold area of Rochdale. Helping residents to recycle right means less money spent on waste disposal and more on other front line services.”
