About Rochdale Borough Council

A council which builds success and prosperity with our citizens and partners, whilst protecting our vulnerable people.

Lying at the foothills of the South Pennines, and with a population of around 210,000, the borough of Rochdale is formed by the four townships of Rochdale, Middleton, Heywood and Pennines.

It sprang to prominence as a major textiles manufacturer, predominantly cotton, during the 19th century. Historically a part of Lancashire, its history dates back to the Domesday Book, where it is described as Recedham. Rochdale Town Hall—a Grade I listed building—dates from 1871 and is said to be one of the United Kingdom's finest examples of Victorian Gothic revival architecture. Rochdale is also the birthplace of the Co-operative Movement, started by The Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society in 1844.
